HISTORY
The history of West Berlin’s oldest hotel began already in 1872 when Berthold Kempinski, a Jewish businessman, opened a wine store with restaurant in Berlin’s Kronenstraße. The business flourished and, only a short while later, he also opened the M. Kempinski & Co. wine restaurant on the corner Friedrich/Leipziger Straße. In 1889 a further restaurant opened in the Leipziger Straße. After Berthold Kempinski’s death in 1910 his family continued to successfully manage the businesses. In 1918 the impressive Kempinski opened on the Kurfürstendamm 27 and, in 1928, the legendary Haus Vaterland opened on the Potsdamer Platz with its 13 themed restaurants. During the Third Reich, the family had to sell its properties and emigrated from Germany to USA. The Restaurant Kempinski was “arianized” and continued under the name “F. W. Borchardt”. Unfortunately, the restaurant on Kurfürstendamm 27 was completely destroyed shortly before the end of the war by a fire. A grandson of the owner, Dr. Friedrich Unger, returned from the USA in 1950. In 1951 he began building a hotel on Kurfürstendamm 27 which was opened in 1952 under the name “Bristol Hotel Kempinski”. This modern and progressive five-star hotel was the first and only luxury hotel in West Berlin and remained so, undisputed, for 20 years. In 1953 Unger sold his shares and the Kempinski name to the Hotelbetriebs-Aktiengesellschaft (a hotel-owning company), founded in Berlin in 1897, which already had hotels such as the Baltic and the Kaiserhof. The Bristol name was carried on and is, still today, part of the Kempinski Hotel Bristol on the Ku´damm 27.
